Hey,
I’m Lilly Koroluk. I’m a university student who started learning how to play the guitar when I was 10 and am now a guitar teacher for students of all ages.
I started guitar lessons because I thought that learning the guitar would be fun and might help me make more friends. I quickly discovered how fun and satisfying it is to be able to play a musical instrument. Today I play guitar (acoustic, and electric), bass guitar, drums, piano, mandolin, and ukulele.
I think my passion for music started with my parents but it’s also my own. I enjoy a wider variety of music than my parents do—everything from country to pop to classic rock and jazz. Some of my favorite musicians and groups are Green day, The Grateful Dead, Phish, Wes Montgomery, and Sabrina Carpenter. In school I focused on a performance degree in jazz and contemporary popular music but also have taken quite a few recording and production classes to refine that skill.
My Guitar Teaching Style
I’m a nice person and would never be hard on a student. That said, I want my students to actually learn how to play guitar so I’m direct about what they’re doing wrong and how they can fix it.
Sometimes students get frustrated when learning a new song and they want to give up. When that happens, I play them what I’m learning and let them see that I’m struggling with it.
Struggle is part of learning. If we don’t struggle, we don’t get the immense satisfaction that comes with mastering a song!
The way I teach is somewhat collaborative in that I will customize guitar lessons to my student’s desires. If you or your child are really keen on learning a certain song and it’s an easy one for a beginner to learn, we’ll start there.
Pride
My gender identity is integral to my being. I didn’t feel comfortable expressing how I felt about myself when I first realized I was transgender and integrating that into my life now that I have out on my own has been quite difficult. You are loved and it is always worth being yourself.
